Bryant Austin spent two three-month seasons in Tonga patiently getting to know the humpback whales that come here to calf and mate. He seeks out whales who are inquisitive and accepting of his presence. During this period he had only four encounters of this quality.
His photographs are taken within meters of his subject. He composes a series of high-resolution images along their body length – to be made later into stunning life-sized composites.
